Carbon footprint of a university campus from Colombia

چکیده
In the past 50 years, higher education institutions worldwide have progressively implemented sustainability policies focused on improving their environmental indicators and institutional image. This trend also occurs in Colombia, both private public institutions. One of issues associated with that has experienced increasing interest by these entities is Climate Change, which reflected an number inventories Greenhouse Gases (GHG) organizational nature. Following this trend, Technological University Pereira (UTP), as a state institution, quantified its carbon footprint 2017. Through application GHG Protocol methodology, direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect electricity 2) other 3) were established. total, 2017 UTP emitted 8969 t CO2-eq, 97% scope 3 emissions, mainly due to daily mobility students officials, construction infrastructure. Likewise, each member university community 0.4 CO2-eq. Compared universities rest world, per person at low, among reasons, because campus does not generate or use heating furthermore, terms proximity, employees residences relation are close, allows commuting mostly short. Additionally, impact total years 2018 three strategies favor reducing based better management water, teachers was evaluated. If had been would decreased 3.1% average conservative scenario 4.8% optimistic scenario.

Visualizing Carbon Footprint from School Meals
Food is a major contributor of greenhouse gases in the world. Changing what you eat to a less greenhouse gas intensive diet can have a major impact on the greenhouse gas emission. While campaigns and efforts about changing diets directed towards individuals have a potential to reduce total greenhouse gases, efforts directed towards institutional producers of meals have much greater potential to...
متن کاملMicrobial biogeography of a university campus
BACKGROUND Microorganisms are distributed on surfaces within homes, workplaces, and schools, with the potential to impact human health and disease. University campuses represent a unique opportunity to explore the distribution of microorganisms within built environments because of high human population densities, throughput, and variable building usage. For example, the main campus of the Unive...
متن کاملA Step toward a Sustainable Diet by Reducing Carbon Footprint: A Case Study in Iran
Introduction: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have caused environmental effects. Food production is one of the sources of GHGs. This study aimed to suggest dietary scenarios for decreasing GHG emissions. Materials and Methods: GHG emissions in the target population of Urmia city, Northwest Iran, were investigated using a modeling approach. Three dietary scenarios were modeled and analyzed to ev...
متن کاملHydropower's Biogenic Carbon Footprint
Global warming is accelerating and the world urgently needs a shift to clean and renewable energy. Hydropower is currently the largest renewable source of electricity, but its contribution to climate change mitigation is not yet fully understood. Hydroelectric reservoirs are a source of biogenic greenhouse gases and in individual cases can reach the same emission rates as thermal power plants. ...
متن کاملMeasuring Caltech’s Carbon Footprint
The project deals with collecting data on greenhouse gas emissions on the Caltech campus. The emissions are categorized in 3 scopes. Scope 1 includes direct emissions, scope 2 indirect emissions from purchased water and electricity and scope 3 other indirect emissions. The data is used as an input in a Carbon footprint calculator, giving as an output a corresponding number of tons of carbon dio...
