Captures of Oriental Fruit Flies and Melon Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Traps Baited With Torula Yeast Borax Solution Or 2- Or 3-Component Synthetic Food Cones in Hawaii

Food-based traps are an integral component of detection systems for invasive fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) species which pose a serious threat to many agricultural crops. A commonly used bait is torula yeast borax solution; however, it attractive relatively short intervals (1–2 wk), necessitating frequent replacement. dry, synthetic food that incorporates several components into single matrix (or cone) has been developed and appears be effective as long 4 10 wk in field trials with the Mediterranean (Ceratitis capitata [Wiedemann]) Caribbean (Anastrepha suspensa [Loew]) (both Diptera: Tephritidae). Based on these results, cones now large-scale programs even though their attractiveness other economically important tephritids, most notably Bactrocera Zeugodacus species, not well studied. The goal this study was compare captures oriental (Bactrocera dorsalis [Hendel]) melon (Zeugodacus cucurbitae [Coquillett]) baited solution 3-component (ammonium acetate, putrescine, trimethylamine) or 2-component acetate putrescine) cones. Data from wild released flies both showed were significantly higher than those either type formulation. Implications finding trapping discussed.
