Canada's forage fish: an important but poorly understood component of marine ecosystems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Forage fish form a critical trophic link in marine ecosystems, and yet, for many species, there is limited information available. As nations move from single species stock assessments to ecosystem approaches fisheries management (EAFMs), more on forage will be required. In this study, 50 years of scientific literature were systematically mapped 11 Canada's Arctic, Atlantic, Pacific oceans. The objectives identify (1) knowledge clusters gaps (2) the pressures studied relation outcomes. Of 2897 articles mapped, majority adults distribution, productivity, growth, life history commercially fished species. Knowledge identified fish: that noncommercially exploited; egg larval stages most juveniles noncommercial species; (3) diets (4) migration performance all survival (5) effects some (e.g., large-scale climate pressures). Addressing these would improve application EAFMs.

Thrombosis – Besieged but Poorly Understood
In biology, thrombosis is a mechanism of maintaining the integrity of biological surfaces in higher mammals, limiting fluid loss, and facilitating the recognition, containment, and destruction of pathogens and foreign materials by a scaffold of fibrin and DNA strands. However, thrombosis may also lead to vascular occlusion and subsequent tissue damage. In medicine, thrombosis is a hallmark of l...
متن کاملQ Fever: An Old but Still a Poorly Understood Disease
Q fever is a bacterial infection affecting mainly the lungs, liver, and heart. It is found around the world and is caused by the bacteria Coxiella burnetii. The bacteria affects sheep, goats, cattle, dogs, cats, birds, rodents, and ticks. Infected animals shed this bacteria in birth products, feces, milk, and urine. Humans usually get Q fever by breathing in contaminated droplets released by in...
متن کاملForage Fish: From Ecosystems to Markets
Fisheries targeting small-to-medium pelagic, so-called forage fish, impact on human food security and marine ecosystems. Because their operations are shrouded by the myth that forage fish are unsuitable for human consumption, the role of these fisheries in intensive food production is not well understood or appreciated. Thus, although they account for over 30% of global landings of marine fish ...
متن کاملBronchiectasis: an orphan disease with a poorly-understood prognosis.
The prognosis and risk factors for bronchiectasis are at present poorly known. The aim of this study was to examine the long-term prognosis and cause of death in this disease. The National Hospital Discharge Register was used to search for patients aged 35-74 yrs, with newly-diagnosed bronchiectasis in the period 1982-1986. Each of the 842 patients identified was matched with an asthmatic patie...
