Can you crowdsource expertise? Comparing expert and crowd‐based scoring keys for three situational judgment tests

چکیده

It is common practice to rely on a convenience sample of subject matter experts (SMEs) when developing scoring keys for situational judgment tests (SJTs). However, the defining characteristics what constitutes SME are often ambiguous and inconsistent. Sampling SMEs can also impose considerable costs. Other research fields have adopted crowdsourcing methods replace or reproduce judgments thought require expertise. Therefore, we conducted current study compare crowdsourced SME-based three SJTs designed different job domains: Medicine, Communication, Military. Our results indicate that derived from samples likely converge with based judgment, regardless test content (r = .88 .94 between keys). We observed weakest agreement among individual MTurk ratings Medical SJT (classification consistency 61%) relative Military Communication (80% 85%). Although general mental ability conscientiousness were each related greater expert similarity raters, average crowd rating outperformed nearly all raters. Using randomly-drawn bootstrapped in samples, found as few 30–40 raters may provide adequate estimates most items. These findings suggest potential usefulness an alternative supplement SME-generated keys.

How "situational" is judgment in situational judgment tests?

Whereas situational judgment tests (SJTs) have traditionally been conceptualized as low-fidelity simulations with an emphasis on contextualized situation descriptions and context-dependent knowledge, a recent perspective views SJTs as measures of more general domain (context-independent) knowledge. In the current research, we contrasted these 2 perspectives in 3 studies by removing the situatio...

Situational judgment tests: a review of recent research

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to give an empirically-based review of the strengths and weaknesses of situational judgment tests (SJTs). Design/methodology/approach – The features, history, and development of SJTs are discussed. Next, a computerized search (from 1990-2007) is conducted to retrieve empirical studies related to SJTs. The effectiveness of SJTs is discussed in terms of reli...
