Can Technology Solve the Principal-Agent Problem? Evidence from China’s War on Air Pollution

چکیده

We examine the introduction of automatic air pollution monitoring to counter suspected tampering at local level, a central feature China’s “war on pollution.” Exploiting 654 regression discontinuity designs based city-level variation in day that was automated, we find an immediate and lasting increase 35 percent reported PM 10 concentrations post-automation. Moreover, automation’s increased online searches for face masks filters, which are strong predictors purchases. Overall, our findings suggest biased imperfect information prior automation led suboptimal investments defensive measures, plausibly imposing meaningful welfare costs. Can Counterfactuals Solve the Exclusion Problem?

Who suffers from indoor air pollution? Evidence from Bangladesh.

In this paper, we investigate individuals' exposure to indoor air pollution. Using new survey data from Bangladesh, average hours spent by members of households in the cooking area, living area and outdoors in a typical day are combined with the estimates of pollution concentration in different locations in order to estimate exposure. We analyse exposure at two levels: differences within househ...
