Can Shrub Flammability be Affected by Goat Grazing? Flammability Parameters of Mediterranean Shrub Species under Grazing

نویسندگان

چکیده

In this study, we evaluated changes in the potential flammability of different Mediterranean shrub species a pine (Pinus pinea) forest Doñana Natural Park (of SW Spain) as result goat grazing. Plant height, total biomass, fine fuel biomass and leaves/wood ratio were measured individual plants each both grazed ungrazed areas. Moisture content, mean time ignition, combustion, gross heat combustion (GHC) class studied determined laboratory. The results experiment showed that grazing influenced characteristics species. However, strength effect was insufficient to modify index these plants, except case Myrtus communis, which presented lower index. According Valette’s classification, Cistus salviifolius, Halimium halimifolium Pistacea lentiscus are flammable species, Rosmarinus officinalis is flammable-highly M. communis non-flammable. GHC values obtained generally “intermediate”, for those R. officinalis, classified “high”. parameters study did not show very marked trend relation grazing, but vertical structure change by presenting reduced leaves twigs. This altered physical possibly acted reduce inherent fire risk shrublands.

Genetic component of flammability variation in a Mediterranean shrub.

Recurrent fires impose a strong selection pressure in many ecosystems worldwide. In such ecosystems, plant flammability is of paramount importance because it enhances population persistence, particularly in non-resprouting species. Indeed, there is evidence of phenotypic divergence of flammability under different fire regimes. Our general hypothesis is that flammability-enhancing traits are ada...

Reindeer grazing increases summer albedo by reducing shrub abundance in Arctic tundra

Previous studies have shown that climate warming is causing shrub cover to increase at high latitudes. Increased shrub cover generally lowers surface albedo, which results in higher energy absorption and further warming. In parts of Fennoscandia, herbivory is known to control vegetation height and abundance, and thus preventing this positive feedback. Here, we combine field measurements of albe...

Shrub encroachment can reverse desertification in semi-arid Mediterranean grasslands.

The worldwide phenomenon of shrub encroachment in grass-dominated dryland ecosystems is commonly associated with desertification. Studies of the purported desertification effects associated with shrub encroachment are often restricted to relatively few study areas, and document a narrow range of possible impacts upon biota and ecosystem processes. We conducted a study in degraded Mediterranean ...

Determinants of flammability in savanna grass species

Tropical grasses fuel the majority of fires on Earth. In fire-prone landscapes, enhanced flammability may be adaptive for grasses via the maintenance of an open canopy and an increase in spatiotemporal opportunities for recruitment and regeneration. In addition, by burning intensely but briefly, high flammability may protect resprouting buds from lethal temperatures. Despite these potential ben...

Mulch Flammability

Introduction Regardless of how horrible and devastating wildland fires are portrayed by the media, they are a natural disturbance that many native ecosystems depend on for regeneration. As the population of the United States increases, more individuals are building their homes in wildlands rather than urban landscapes. Homes built in undeveloped wildland vegetation create areas often referred t...
