Can Pop Culture Allay Resentment? Japan’s Influence in China Today

In China, despite the traumatic collective memory relating to militaristic Japan during World War II, an increasing number of Chinese young adults have developed obsession with Japanese culture, due its export anime, movies, pop music, and other popular culture. Based on interviews 40 adults, this work examines how contemporary culture historical war memories related influenced who had reconcile their contradictory sentiments toward government, people, The success in China also shows allegedly apolitical, virtual sphere entertainment has helped build Japan’s soft power through shaping a cool image Asia worldwide.
