Can ash from smoldering fires increase peatland soil pH?

چکیده

Peatland wildfire frequency and severity are increasing globally owing to climate change. The direct risk of elevated greenhouse gas emissions from peat burning receives much attention, yet the risks vegetation composition or decomposition alkaline ash inputs poorly understood. We explored whether produced during smoldering increases peatland topsoil (∼0–25 cm) pH through field observations laboratory experiments. assessed spatial patterns presence, measured soil after a in Netherlands. Additionally, experiment was conducted compare freshly with aged collected 2 months following wildfire. we amount needed increase pH. Results showed that at site were insufficient acidic Incubation experiments ≥3 cm layer (ash load 163 t ha–1) would be required by least 1 unit. Given slightly fresh alkaline, leaching neutralisation is likely, suggesting input may transient rather than long term.

Post-fire tree stress and growth following smoldering duff fires

Understanding the proximate causes of post-fire conifer mortality due to smoldering duff fires is essential to the restoration and management of coniferous forests throughout North America. To better understand duff fire-caused mortality, we investigated tree stress and radial growth following experimental fires in a long-unburned forest on deep sands in northern Florida, USA. We burned basal f...

the effect of granulated wood-ash fertilization on soil properties and greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions in boreal peatland forests

The amount of wood ash produced in power plants is increasing with increasing use of forest biomass in energy production. Wood ash can be recycled as fertilizer especially in boreal peatland forests naturally rich in nitrogen. Improved nutrient availability and increases in soil pH can enhance microbial activities, decomposition of organic matter and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We studied t...

Mutagenicity and Lung Toxicity of Smoldering vs. Flaming Emissions from Various Biomass Fuels: Implications for Health Effects from Wildland Fires.

BACKGROUND The increasing size and frequency of wildland fires are leading to greater potential for cardiopulmonary disease and cancer in exposed populations; however, little is known about how the types of fuel and combustion phases affect these adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVES We evaluated the mutagenicity and lung toxicity of particulate matter (PM) from flaming vs. smoldering phases of five b...

Wood Ash Induced pH Changes Strongly Affect Soil Bacterial Numbers and Community Composition

Recirculation of wood ash from energy production to forest soil improves the sustainability of this energy production form as recycled wood ash contains nutrients that otherwise would be lost at harvest. In addition, wood-ash is beneficial to many soils due to its inherent acid-neutralizing capabilities. However, wood ash has several ecosystem-perturbing effects like increased soil pH and pore ...
