Caldera collapse and tectonics along the Main Ethiopian Rift: reviewing possible relationships

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) represents an area where volcanism and tectonics interact to create closely linked volcano-tectonic features. This linkage is paramount in the axial portion of rift, magmatic segments localize several large peralkaline eruptive centres. Many them evolved into caldera collapse (the best preserved which are younger than <1Ma) generating ignimbrites registering interaction between magmatism along MER. In this work we review structure main collapsed calderas MER, summarize relationships proposed literature explaining their structural evolution. By doing this, infer that had a strong influence controlling elongation majority examined calderas. control was induced by reactivation inherited crustal fabrics or stretching magma reservoirs under MER regional stress field.

Characterization of Water Level Variability of the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes

In this paper, the water level fluctuations of eight Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes were analyzed for their hydrological stability in terms of water level dynamics and their controlling factors. Long-term water balances and morphological nature of the lakes were used as bases for the analyses. Pettit’s homogeneity test and Mann–Kendall trend analysis were applied to test temporal variations of the...

Caldera rim collapse: A hidden volcanic hazard

Following the emblematic fl ank collapse of Mount St Helens in 1981, numerous models of flank sliding have been proposed. These models have allowed to largely improve the understanding of mechanisms involved in such landslides, which represent a tremendous risk for populations living around volcanoes. In this article, a new mode of landslide formation, related to buried calderas, is described. ...

Fluoride exposure from groundwater as reflected by urinary fluoride and children's dental fluorosis in the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley.

This cross-sectional study explores the relationships between children's F(-) exposure from drinking groundwater and urinary F(-) concentrations, combined with dental fluorosis (DF) in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) Valley. We examined the DF prevalence and severity among 491 children (10 to 15 years old) who are life-long residents of 33 rural communities in which groundwater concentrations of ...

Groundwater quality and its health impact: An assessment of dental fluorosis in rural inhabitants of the Main Ethiopian Rift.

This study aims to assess the link between fluoride content in groundwater and its impact on dental health in rural communities of the Ethiopian Rift. A total of 148 water samples were collected from two drainage basins within the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER). In the Ziway-Shala basin in particular, wells had high fluoride levels (mean: 9.4±10.5mg/L; range: 1.1 to 68 mg/L), with 48 of 50 exceeding...
