Calcite-Mineralized Fossil Wood from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

چکیده
Calcite-mineralized wood occurs in marine sedimentary rocks on Vancouver Island, British Columbia at sites that range age from Early Cretaceous to Paleocene. These fossil woods commonly have excellent anatomical preservation resulted a permineralization process where calcite infiltrated buried under relatively gentle geochemical conditions. Wood specimens typically occur calcareous concretions feldspathic clastic sediment. Other the same outcrops contain abundant mollusk and crustacea fossils are evidence plant remains were fluvially transported into basin. Fossiliferous show zoning, comprising an inner region of progressive precipitation cement developed as concentric halo around organic nucleus. An outer zone was produced by pervasive cementation, which when simultaneously precipitated pore spaces over entire zone.

Surveillance for Cryptococcus gattii in horses of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
In the last decade Cryptococcus gattii has emerged as an important human and animal pathogen in southwestern British Columbia (BC), Canada. When the disease initially emerged it was identified in humans and multiple animal species on the east coast of Vancouver Island. From fall 2003 until summer 2004, active surveillance was initiated to look for horses exposed to or infected with the organism...
متن کاملHoneggeriella complexa gen. et sp. nov., a heteromerous lichen from the Lower Cretaceous of Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada).
PREMISE OF THE STUDY Colonists of even the most inhospitable environments, lichens are present in all terrestrial ecosystems. Because of their ecological versatility and ubiquity, they have been considered excellent candidates for early colonizers of terrestrial environments. Despite such predictions, good preservation potential, and the extant diversity of lichenized fungi, the fossil record o...
متن کاملNote on Desorption Results of Comox Formation Coals from the Courtenay Area, Vancouver Island, British Columbia
There has been increasing interest in the coalbed methane (CBM) potential in the coalfields of British Columbia and some of this interest has been directed at the Comox Basin on Vancouver Island. The CBM resource of the basin has been estimated by a number of authors using published coal data. Most recently by Ryan (2001) quotes a potential resource of 0.8 tcf. These estimates are indeed estima...
متن کاملNEOTECTONIC INVESTIGATIONS ON WESTERN VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA (92F/4) By P.T. Bobrowsky and J.J. Clague, Geological Survey of Canada
Interest in the contemporary geodynamic setting of southwestern British Columbia stems from a concern that a large earthquake may impact the major urban centres of the province. Indeed, monitoring of seismic activity in western Canada indicates that numerous smaller magnitude (<M4) intraplate earthquakes affect the southern coastal region annually. and that very small tremors occur daily. Large...
متن کاملThe seasonal cycle in sinking particle # uxes o ! Vancouver Island , British Columbia
We have made year-long observations of sinking particle #uxes with sequential sediment traps moored at a depth of 200 m at three sites proceeding o!shore from Vancouver Island, Canada in water depths of 500}2500 m. Total particle #ux and biogenic silica decreased o!shore as expected in an eastern boundary current regime. No obvious gradient was observed in POC, and CaCO was proportionally great...
