Calcineurin inhibitor agents interact synergistically with antifungal agents in vitro against Cryptococcus neoformans isolates: correlation with outcome in solid organ transplant recipients with cryptococcosis.
Synergistic interactions were observed between CIs and antifungal agents against 53 (90%) of 59 Cryptococcus neoformans isolates from solid organ transplant recipients with cryptococcosis and may account for better outcomes in patients with cryptococcosis receiving these immunosuppressive agents.
متن کاملCryptococcus neoformans in organ transplant recipients: impact of calcineurin-inhibitor agents on mortality.
Variables influencing the risk of dissemination and outcome of Cryptococcus neoformans infection were assessed in 111 organ transplant recipients with cryptococcosis in a prospective, multicenter, international study. Sixty-one percent (68/111) of the patients had disseminated infection. The risk of disseminated cryptococcosis was significantly higher for liver transplant recipients (adjusted h...
متن کاملSusceptibility of Cryptococcus neoformans biofilms to antifungal agents in vitro.
Microbial biofilms contribute to virulence and resistance to antibiotics by shielding microbial cells from host defenses and antimicrobial drugs, respectively. Cryptococcus neoformans was demonstrated to form biofilms in polystyrene microtiter plates. The numbers of CFU of disaggregated biofilms, 2,3-bis(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-5-[(phenylamino)carbonyl]-2H-tetrazolium hydroxide reducti...
متن کاملCryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii, the etiologic agents of cryptococcosis.
Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are the two etiologic agents of cryptococcosis. They belong to the phylum Basidiomycota and can be readily distinguished from other pathogenic yeasts such as Candida by the presence of a polysaccharide capsule, formation of melanin, and urease activity, which all function as virulence determinants. Infection proceeds via inhalation and subsequent ...
متن کاملIn vitro activity of five antifungal agents against Candida albicans isolates, Sari, Iran
Background and Purpose: Candida albicans is the most common causative agent of candidiasis. Candidiasis management is dependent on the immune status of the host, severity of disease, and the choice of antifungal drug. Antifungals, specifically triazoles, are widely administered for the treatment of invasive fungal infections. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of C. alb...
