BVLOS UAV missions for vegetation mapping in maritime Antarctic

چکیده
Polar areas are among the regions where climate change occurs faster than on most of other Earth. To study effects vegetation, there is a need for knowledge its current status and properties. Both classic field observation methods remote sensing based manned aircraft or satellite image analysis have limitations. These include high logistic operation costs, limited research areas, safety risks, direct human impact, insufficient resolution images. Fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle beyond visual line sight (UAV BVLOS) missions can bridge scale gap between field-based observations full-scale airborne surveys. In this two operations UAV BVLOS, at an altitude 350 m ASL, been successfully performed in Antarctic conditions. Maps vegetation western shore Admiralty Bay (King George Island, South Shetlands, Western Antarctic) that included Specially Protected Area No. 128 (ASPA 128) were designed. The 7.5 km 2 area was mapped ultra-high (<5 cm DEM 0.25 GSD), from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), four broad units extracted: “dense moss carpets” (covering 0.14 , 0.8% ASPA 128), “ Sanionia uncinata bed” (0.31 1.7% Deschampsia antarctica grass meadow” (0.24 1.3% – Usnea heath” (1.66 9.4% 128). Our results demonstrate presented BVLOS–based surveys time-effective (single flight lasting 2.5 h distance 300 km) cost-effective when compared to classical less invasive ecosystem. Moreover, vehicles significantly improve security, which particular interest polar region research. Therefore, their development highly recommended monitoring fragile environments.

Active Learning in Persistent Surveillance UAV Missions
The performance of many complex UAV decision-making problems can be extremely sensitive to small errors in the model parameters. One way of mitigating this sensitivity is by designing algorithms that more effectively learn the model throughout the course of a mission. This paper addresses this important problem by considering model uncertainty in a multi-agent Markov Decision Process (MDP) and ...
متن کاملPlanning Search and Rescue Missions for UAV Teams
The coordination of multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to carry out aerial surveys is a major challenge for emergency responders. In particular, UAVs have to fly over kilometre-scale areas while trying to discover casualties as quickly as possible. To aid in this process, it is desirable to exploit the increasing availability of data about a disaster from sources such as crowd reports, sa...

متن کاملUAV Remote Sensing for Urban Vegetation Mapping Using Random Forest and Texture Analysis
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing has great potential for vegetation mapping in complex urban landscapes due to the ultra-high resolution imagery acquired at low altitudes. Because of payload capacity restrictions, off-the-shelf digital cameras are widely used on medium and small sized UAVs. The limitation of low spectral resolution in digital cameras for vegetation mapping can be re...
متن کاملAn Augmented Reality System for Multi-UAV Missions
Augmented Reality (AR) is a relatively new field of research with diverse application areas. In this paper we present a novel approach in using AR technology in multiple Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) missions to augment the UAVs’ sensor systems with Decentralised Data Fusion (DDF) capable sensors, performing multi-modal sensor registration and cooperative control experiments. The AR system is bein...
