Bulk viscosity of dilute monatomic gases revisited

چکیده

Extensive research has been carried out in the past to estimate bulk viscosity of dense monatomic fluids; however, little attention paid same dilute gas regime. In this work, we perform precise Green-Kubo calculations molecular dynamics simulations argon gas. The investigated temperature and pressure range is 300 750 K 0.5 1.5 bar respectively. It observed that estimated $O(10^{-10})$ Pa s, which several orders magnitude smaller than other diatomic polyatomic gases, but nonetheless, not an absolute zero as typically assumed. implies Stokes' hypothesis true for gases only approximate rather sense. variation with pressures at constant temperatures also studied found be quadratic nature. obtained values are reported reduced Lennard-Jones units enable extension present results noble well. becomes independent very low densities.

Dilute Fermi and Bose Gases

We give a unified perspective on the properties of a variety of quantum liquids using the theory of quantum phase transitions. A central role is played by a zero density quantum critical point which is argued to control the properties of the dilute gas. An exact renormalization group analysis of such quantum critical points leads to a computation of the universal properties of the dilute Bose g...

Coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering measurements of bulk viscosity of polar and nonpolar gases, and kinetic theory.

We investigate coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin spectroscopy as an efficient process to measure the bulk viscosity of gases at gigahertz frequencies. Scattered spectral distributions are measured using a Fizeau spectrometer. We discuss the statistical error due to the fluctuating mode structure of the used pump laser. Experiments were done for both polar and nonpolar gases and the bulk viscosity was...

Bulk viscosity and conformal symmetry breaking in the dilute Fermi gas near unitarity.

The dilute Fermi gas at unitarity is scale invariant and its bulk viscosity vanishes. We compute, in the high temperature limit, the leading contribution to the bulk viscosity when the scattering length is not infinite. A measure of scale breaking is provided by the ratio (P-2πħ/3ε)/P, where P is the pressure and E is the energy density. At high temperature this ratio scales as zλ/a, where z is...

Radiative Bulk Viscosity

Viscous resistance to changes in the volume of a gas arises when different degrees of freedom have different relaxation times. Collisions tend to oppose the resulting departures from equilibrium and, in so doing, generate entropy. Even for a classical gas of hard spheres, when the mean free paths or mean flight times of constituent particles are long, we find a nonvanishing bulk viscosity. Here...

‘Understanding’ cosmological bulk viscosity

A universe consisting of two interacting perfect fluids with the same 4-velocity is considered. A heuristic mean free time argument is used to show that the system as a whole cannot be perfect as well but neccessarily implies a nonvanishing bulk viscosity. A new formula for the latter is derived and compared with corresponding results of radiative hydrodynamics.
