Building relationships back into the food system: addressing food insecurity and food well-being

Introduction Failures of the current food system sit at core multitude crises by being root framework for both consumption choices and production. Low-income households are disproportionately affected these failures, impacting their security access to healthy sustainable foods. Community-supported agriculture (CSA) is a bottom-up response towards an agri-food transformation providing alternative based on agroecologically grown that sold locally rooted in social values. Alongside other citizenship movements networks (AFN), CSAs driven vision develop democratic, socially economically just, environmentally system. Yet, low-income underrepresented CSA community. Method Our paper presents findings from co-produced intervention between research team, four farms Wales, United Kingdom two aid partners sought identify ways improve accessibility memberships food-insecure households. Thirty-eight received weekly veg bag period 2–4 months. We interviewed 16 household members project start end harvest season. Building well-being framework, we investigate impacts membership Results found holistically improves well-being, through strengthening producer-consumer relationships, increasing availability foods, helping people care own families building place-based capability literacy. Discussion This supports wider narratives call systematically prioritizing interventions promote overall which can lead just systems with positive outcomes financially excluded, insecure localized AFNs.
