Buffet boundary prediction using RANS-based criteria and adjoint methods

In this work a procedure is proposed for fast estimate of the transonic buffet boundary on aerofoils and wings. This algorithm aims to be an alternative unsteady computational fluid dynamics simulations that are prohibitively expensive complex flow cases. The combines steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes with adjoint method. were used determine onset by means suitable criteria, while method was compute sensitivities parameters flight conditions, draw boundary. tested two-dimensional configurations available experimental data two different criteria. Particular attention paid efficiency its ability reduce cost respect purely RANS criteria estimation. Possible variations also discussed in results section together effect some key algorithm.
