چکیده
Abstract. The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) will be losing mass at an accelerating pace throughout the 21st century, with a direct link between anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and magnitude of loss. Currently, approximately 60 % loss contribution comes from surface melt subsequent meltwater runoff, while 40 are due to ice calving. In ablation zone covered by bare in summer, most energy is provided absorbed shortwave fluxes, which could reduced solar geoengineering measures. However, so far very little known about potential impacts artificial reduction incoming radiation on GrIS budget change production. By forcing regional climate model MAR latest CMIP6 shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP) future emission scenarios (SSP245, SSP585) associated G6solar experiment CNRM-ESM2-1 Earth system model, we estimate local impact constant projected balance (SMB) decrease. Overall, our results show that even case low-mitigation scenario (SSP585), can brought line medium-mitigation (SSP245) reducing downward flux top atmosphere ∼ W/m2 or 1.5 (using experiment). addition global warming SSP245, also decreases efficiency production over sheet damping well-known positive melt–albedo feedback. With respect simulation where remains unchanged, decreasing according radiative scheme mitigates increase 6 %. only more constraining experiments than would allow us maintain SMB until end this century without any emissions.

Surface melt-induced acceleration of Greenland ice-sheet flow.
Ice flow at a location in the equilibrium zone of the west-central Greenland Ice Sheet accelerates above the midwinter average rate during periods of summer melting. The near coincidence of the ice acceleration with the duration of surface melting, followed by deceleration after the melting ceases, indicates that glacial sliding is enhanced by rapid migration of surface meltwater to the ice-bed...
متن کاملMicrobial abundance in surface ice on the Greenland Ice Sheet
Measuring microbial abundance in glacier ice and identifying its controls is essential for a better understanding and quantification of biogeochemical processes in glacial ecosystems. However, cell enumeration of glacier ice samples is challenging due to typically low cell numbers and the presence of interfering mineral particles. We quantified for the first time the abundance of microbial cell...
متن کاملGreenland ice sheet melt from MODIS and associated atmospheric variability
Daily June-July melt fraction variations over the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (2000-2013) are associated with atmospheric blocking forming an omega-shape ridge over the GIS at 500 hPa height. Blocking activity with a range of time scales, from synoptic waves breaking poleward (<5 days) to full-fledged blocks (≥5 days), brings ...
