Breeding Late Blight Resistant Potatoes for Organic Farming—a Collaborative Model of Participatory Plant Breeding: the Bioimpuls Project

چکیده
Abstract In organic potato production, the need for varieties with durable late blight resistance developed through classical breeding programmes is urgent. Besides resistance, other variety characteristics needed in production are early canopy closure weed suppression and good tuber dormancy to eliminate (chemical) sprouting inhibition during storage, amongst others. This paper a unique example of collaboration between researchers, farmers professional breeders both large, medium small companies. The aim resulting project, Bioimpuls, was provide substantial impulse conventional sector by enlarging access various sources resistance. Bioimpuls activities include providing true seed populations selection five available R -genes against Phytophthora infestans , advanced introgression six new -genes, education communication. results achieved over 11-year period (2009–2019) analysed. Many containing multiple genes produced selected, constant flow clones entering evaluation positioning trials However, it will still take considerable amount time before stacked replace resistant single gene market next few years. Five out more years backcrossing they ready commercial use. successfully introduced training course farmer breeders, published manual breeding.

Development of late blight resistant potatoes by cisgene stacking
BACKGROUND Phytophthora infestans, causing late blight in potato, remains one of the most devastating pathogens in potato production and late blight resistance is a top priority in potato breeding. The introduction of multiple resistance (R) genes with different spectra from crossable species into potato varieties is required. Cisgenesis is a promising approach that introduces native genes from...
متن کاملFarmer Plant Breeding from a Biological Perspective: Implications for Collaborative Plant Breeding
Plant breeding by researchers has become increasingly isolated from the plant breeding of farmers. Collaborative plant breeding (CPB) offers the possibility of bringing these two plant breeding traditions together to increase the usefulness of new crop varieties to farmers, especially small-scale farmers working in stress environments with limited external inputs. This paper presents a framewor...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB). Seventy-six breeders were randomly selected from among 95 breeders who were working at the Seed and Plant Improvement Institute, Karaj, Iran. Data were collected by a questionnaire as the main data collection instrument. The face and content validity of the questionnaire was appr...
متن کاملConcepts and Strategies of Organic Plant Breeding in Light of Novel Breeding Techniques
In this paper, we describe the development of a set of guiding principles for the evaluation of breeding techniques by the organic sector over time. The worldwide standards of organic agriculture (OA) do not allow genetic engineering (GE) or any products derived from genetic engineering. The standards in OA are an expression of the underlying principles of health, ecology, fairness and care. Th...
