Breath Analysis for Early Detection of Rising Ketone Bodies in Postpartum Dairy Cows Classified as at Risk of Ketosis

چکیده

Ketosis is a metabolic disorder associated with high production and low energy intake in dairy cows. Fat reserves are mobilized, gluconeogenesis occurs. Traditionally, rapid tests for blood, milk or urine used to detect increased ketone body levels case of ketosis. Breath analysis relatively new relevant the development automatic sensor systems early warning. This study aims determine whether when postpartum rise bodies occurs breath elevated blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) cows at risk Postpartum breath, samples were taken daily until day 7, one prepartum sample excluding milk, concentrations determined. Concentrations BHB 0.4–2.6 mmol/L (lab) 0.3–3.1 (rapid test), acetone was 2.3–20.0 ppm, acetoacetate 0–8 0–500 µmol/L. A related that followed by acetone. However, ketotic non-ketotic similar. We conclude rising can be detected urine, but use as an alternative tests, longitudinal sampling needed.

Detection of ketosis in dairy cows by analysis of exhaled breath.

In four healthy cows an elevation of ketone bodies was induced by reduction of feed intake. Two cows became clearly ketotic while the other two cows showed only slight increases in ketone body concentrations in serum and milk. Acetone concentrations in exhaled breath were measured by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. These values were correlated with concentrations of serum be...

Evaluation and use of three cowside tests for detection of subclinical ketosis in early postpartum cows.

The objective was to evaluate the performance of 3 cowside diagnostic tests for detection of subclinical ketosis, defined as a serum beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentration >or=1400 micromol/L. On 16 d over a 5-mo period, samples of serum, milk, and urine were collected on a large dairy facility from cows of all parities between 2 and 15 DIM. The sample proportion of subclinical ketosis was 7...

A novel chemical method for measuring ketone bodies in subclinical ketosis

Backgrounds: Subclinical ketosis can cause greater economic loss due to a lack of clinical symptoms. Objectives: The present study was aimed to design a chemical method for measuring serum ketone bodies in the affected subclinical cows. Methods: Acetoacetate concentrations were measured using a nitroprusside reaction and b-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA) which was oxidized to acetoacetate using nan...
