Branchwood Properties of Two Tilia Species Collected from Natural Secondary Forests in Northeastern China

Tilia amurensis Rupr. and mandshurica Maxim. are two essential commercial species, though there is surprisingly little concern about whether their branches can be used in the current situation of a wood shortage China. In this study, tissue proportions fiber morphology, physical mechanical properties, chemical composition branchwood were studied compared with stemwood to evaluate potential for papermaking. The showed similar cell arrangement but different morphology. had more than 40% proportion, 90%–97% below 0.9 mm length, 75%–90% less 33 slenderness ratio, 80% 1 Runkel ratio. was as light soft density 0.32–0.36 g/cm3 compressive strength 30 MPa. 6% water extractives, 66% holocellulose, 22% lignin T. amurensis, 58% holocellulose 30% mandshurica. results suggest favorable chipping, has obtain high pulp yield its fibers mixed wide, long thick from other tree species produce specific paper products. contrast, may not suitable pulping.
