Branch-Pipe: Improving Graph Skeletonization around Branch Points in 3D Point Clouds

Modern plant phenotyping requires tools that are robust to noise and missing data, while being able efficiently process large numbers of plants. Here, we studied the skeletonization architectures from 3D point clouds, which is critical for many downstream tasks, including analyses shape, morphology, branching angles. Specifically, developed an algorithm improve at branch points (forks) by leveraging geometric properties cylinders around points. We tested this on a diverse set high-resolution clouds tomato tobacco plants, grown in five environments across multiple developmental timepoints. Compared existing methods skeletonization, our method more accurately estimated angles even areas with noisy, missing, or non-uniformly sampled data. Our also applicable inorganic datasets, such as scans industrial pipes urban scenes containing networks complex cylindrical shapes.
