Blue Carbon Soil Stock Development and Estimates Within Northern Florida Wetlands
نویسندگان
چکیده
Blue carbon habitats, such as mangroves and salt marshes, have been recognized burial hotspots; however, methods on measuring blue stocks varied thus leave uncertainty in global stock estimates. This study analyzes northern Florida wetlands along the Atlantic Gulf coasts. Carbon measurements within 1–3m length vibracores yield total core of 9.9–21.5 kgC·m −2 7.7–10.9 for coast cores, respectively. Following recent IPCC guidelines, estimates top meter are 7.0 –8.0 6.1 –8.6 Changes stable isotopic (δ 13 C, C/N) lignin biomarker (C/V) indices suggest both coastlines experienced marsh mangrove transgressions into non-blue habitats during mid- to late-Holocene following relative sea-level rise. These impact storage cores presence carbon-poor soils, characteristic result lower 1m north wetlands, a deeper extent carbon-rich drive higher wetlands. Future research should assess down bedrock when possible, land-cover and/or climate change can different depths across localities. Ignoring soil below may underestimate potential emissions based these changes.

متن کاملThe Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of forest road construction on the Soil Organic Carbon Stock (SOCS) in Ziarat Catchment. Therefore, soil samples were collected from five land use types including road construction, cultivated area, channel bank, pasture and forest land and soil organic carbon concentration and bulk density were measured in the samples and SOCS were...
متن کاملCarbon Management Response curves: estimates of temporal soil carbon dynamics.
Measurement of the change in soil carbon that accompanies a change in land use (e.g., forest to agriculture) or management (e.g., conventional tillage to no-till) can be complex and expensive, may require reference plots, and is subject to the variability of statistical sampling and short-term variability in weather. In this paper, we develop Carbon Management Response (CMR) curves that could b...
متن کاملDistribution and turnover of carbon in natural and constructed wetlands in the Florida Everglades
Stable and radiocarbon isotopic contents of dissolved organic C (DOC), dissolved inorganic C (DIC), particulate organic C (POC) and plants were used to examine the source and turnover rate of C in natural and constructed wetlands in the Florida Everglades. DOC concentrations decreased, with P concentrations, along a water quality gradient from the agriculturally impacted areas in the northern E...
