Biotic induction and microbial ecological dynamics of Oceanic Anoxic Event 2

چکیده

Abstract Understanding the causal mechanisms of past marine deoxygenation is critical to predicting long-term Earth systems response climate change. However, processes and events preceding widespread carbon burial coincident with oceanic anoxic remain poorly constrained. Here, we report a comprehensive biomarker inventory enveloping Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 that captures microbial communities spanning epipelagic benthic environments in southern proto-North Atlantic Ocean. We identify an abrupt, sustained increase primary productivity predates by ∼220 ± 4 thousand years, well before other geochemical proxies register biogeochemical perturbations. During event, recurrent photic zone euxinia triggered major reorganization accompanied decrease production. These findings highlight how organic drivers operated along continuum concert ecological changes, antecedent, localized increases production destabilizing cycling promoting progressive leading 2.

Planktonic Foraminifera of the Dariyan formation and implications of Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a

The investigated section cropping out in Kuh-e-Banesh, Zagros basin (southern Iran) is represented by limestone, Cherty beds and marllevels bearing abundant Planktonic foraminifers, radiolarian microfaunas, and ammonite imprints. For the first time, well to moderatelypreserved forms of Planktonic foraminifera have been extracted from black shale and marls levels. Extracted biota was studied wit...

Constraining the rate of oceanic deoxygenation leading up to a Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-2: ~94 Ma)

The rates of marine deoxygenation leading to Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events are poorly recognized and constrained. If increases in primary productivity are the primary driver of these episodes, progressive oxygen loss from global waters should predate enhanced carbon burial in underlying sediments-the diagnostic Oceanic Anoxic Event relic. Thallium isotope analysis of organic-rich black shale...

Uranium isotope evidence for two episodes of deoxygenation during Oceanic Anoxic Event 2.

Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE 2), occurring ∼94 million years ago, was one of the most extreme carbon cycle and climatic perturbations of the Phanerozoic Eon. It was typified by a rapid rise in atmospheric CO2, global warming, and marine anoxia, leading to the widespread devastation of marine ecosystems. However, the precise timing and extent to which oceanic anoxic conditions expanded during OAE...

The importance of diazotrophic cyanobacteria as primary producers during Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event 2

In Livello Bonarelli black shale deposited during Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE-2, ca. 94 Ma), nitrogen isotopic compositions of bulk sediments are mostly in a narrow range from –2.7 to –0.7‰. We also determined molecular distribution and nitrogen isotopic compositions of geoporphyrins extracted from the black shale. The nitrogen isotopic compositions of C32 Ni deoxophylloerythroetiopo...
