Biomechanically distinct filter-feeding behaviors distinguish sei whales as a functional intermediate and ecologically flexible species

چکیده

ABSTRACT With their ability to facultatively switch between filter-feeding modes, sei whales represent a functional and ecological intermediate in the transition intermittent continuous filter feeding. Morphologically resembling lunge-feeding, rorqual relatives, have convergently evolved skim prey near surface of water, like more distantly related balaenids. Because nature, understanding how feeding behaviors may shed light on rapid evolution flexibility strategies. We deployed multi-sensor bio-logging tags two measured kinematics this poorly understood endangered species. To forage at surface, used unique combination lunges skim-feeding behaviors. The were slow stereotyped, unlike performed by other events featured different filtration mechanism from kinematically While foraging below faster variable lunges. morphological characteristics that allow effectively perform suggest rapidly functionally ecologically flexible form compete with larger efficient

Effects of Salt Stress on Three Ecologically Distinct Plantago Species

Comparative studies on the responses to salt stress of taxonomically related taxa should help to elucidate relevant mechanisms of stress tolerance in plants. We have applied this strategy to three Plantago species adapted to different natural habitats, P. crassifolia and P. coronopus-both halophytes-and P. major, considered as salt-sensitive since it is never found in natural saline habitats. G...

Protein-coding genes as molecular markers for ecologically distinct populations: the case of two Bacillus species.

Bacillus globisporus and Bacillus psychrophilus are one among many pairs of ecologically distinct taxa that are distinguished by very few nucleotide differences in 16S rRNA gene sequence. This study has investigated whether the lack of divergence in 16S rRNA between such species stems from the unusually slow rate of evolution of this molecule, or whether other factors might be preventing neutra...

Low frequency vocalizations attributed to sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis).

Low frequency (<100 Hz) downsweep vocalizations were repeatedly recorded from ocean gliders east of Cape Cod, MA in May 2005. To identify the species responsible for this call, arrays of acoustic recorders were deployed in this same area during 2006 and 2007. 70 h of collocated visual observations at the center of each array were used to compare the localized occurrence of this call to the occu...

Context-dependent species identity effects within a functional group of filter-feeding bivalves.

We asked whether species richness or species identity contributed more to ecosystem function in a trait-based functional group, burrowing, filter-feeding bivalves (freshwater mussels: Unionidae), and whether their importance changed with environmental context and species composition. We conducted a manipulative experiment in a small river examining the effects of mussel assemblages varying from...
