Bioenergy potential from invasive alien plants: Environmental and socio-economic impacts in Eastern Cape, South Africa

چکیده
South Africa's natural resources and ecosystems are negatively affected by Invasive Alien Plants (IAPs). We used a life-cycle approach to assess the environmental socio-economic impacts of using IAPs for electricity generation in Africa or exported Netherlands. Socio-economic and health aspects of donkeys in North-West and Eastern Cape Provinces, South Africa
Several studies were designed to address the gaps in the information concerning the socio-economic role of donkeys in communities in South Africa. One study was undertaken in the North-West Province during 1995 and another in the Eastern Cape during 1996. Methods used included semi-structured interviews and participatory appraisal techniques. Communities included were from semi-rural and rural ...
متن کاملInvasive alien plants in South Africa: how well do we understand the ecological impacts?
Introduction This account provides a brief overview of alien plant invasions in South Africa, with special emphasis on what is known about their consequences, including those affecting the delivery of ecosystem goods and services. We draw on published and unpublished sources, and highlight some important research challenges in invasion ecology that need to be met if we are to address critical g...
متن کاملAlien aquatics in Europe: assessing the relative environmental and socio- economic impacts of invasive aquatic macroinvertebrates and other taxa
Invasive alien aquatic species, including marine and freshwater macroinvertebrates, have become increasingly important in terms of both environmental and socio-economic impacts. In order to assess their environmental and economic costs, we applied the Generic Impact Scoring System (GISS) and performed a comparison with other taxa of invaders in Europe. Impacts were scored into six environmental...
متن کاملPrevalence, Causes and Socio-Economic Determinants of Vision Loss in Cape Town, South Africa
PURPOSE To estimate the prevalence and causes of blindness and visual impairment in Cape Town, South Africa and to explore socio-economic and demographic predictors of vision loss in this setting. METHODS A cross sectional population-based survey was conducted in Cape Town. Eighty-two clusters were selected using probability proportionate to size sampling. Within each cluster 35 or 40 people ...
