Bioelectrochemical Remediation for the Removal of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminants in Soil

چکیده
Consistent accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbon (PH) in soil and sediments is a big concern and, thus, warrants static technology to continuously remediate PH-contaminated soil. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) can offer the desired solution using inimitable metabolic response electroactive microbes without involving physiochemical process. To date, wide range BES-based applications for PH bioremediations under different environmental conditions readily available literature. Here, latest development trend BESs bioremediation critically analyzed discussed. The reactor design operational factors that affect performance their strategic manipulations such as designing novel reactors improve anodic reactions, enhancing physiology (electrical conductivity, mass diffusion, hydraulic conductivity), electrode modifications, conditions, microbial communities, etc., are elaborated fortify understanding this future research. Most literature noticed low diffusion condition restricts from interacting with contaminant farther electrodes. Therefore, more research efforts warranted, mainly optimize parameters by specific amendments, optimizing experimental parameters, integrating technologies, conducting life cycle cost analysis make viable field-scale applications.

Improvement of petroleum hydrocarbon remediation using the oat plant in the soil treated by poultry manure
This greenhouse experiment aimed to investigate the effects of poultry manure (PM) on the growth of oat plant (Avena sativa) and removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) from soil. The treatments consisted of three TPH levels (4%, 6%, and 8% w/w) and two PM levels (zero and 1%) at three replications. According to the findings, shoot height, number of leaves, and the fresh and dry...
متن کاملPersulfate Oxidation for the Remediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils
The feasibility of total petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated (TPH) soil remediation was studied using persulfate oxidation. Factors tested included type of activator, persulfate concentration, number of persulfate applications, and reaction time. Probe chemicals were used to study effi ciency of the persulfate oxidation mechanism. The best activation method used Fe2+, which achieved 40.8% TPH de...

An integrated photobioelectrochemical (IPB) system was developed by installing a microbial fuel cell (MFC) inside an algal bioreactor. This system achieves the simultaneous removal from a synthetic solution of organics (in the MFC) and nutrients (in the algal bioreactor), and the production of bioenergy in electricity and algal biomass through bioelectrochemical and microbiological processes. متن کاملBioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants in marine habitats.
Bioremediation is being increasingly seen as an effective, environmentally benign treatment for shorelines contaminated as a result of marine oil spills. Despite a relatively long history of research on oil-spill bioremediation, it remains an essentially empirical technology and many of the factors that control bioremediation have yet to be adequately understood. Nutrient amendment is a widely ...
متن کاملCombination of biochar amendment and phytoremediation for hydrocarbon removal in petroleum-contaminated soil
Remediation of soils contaminated with petroleum is a challenging task. Four different bioremediation strategies, including natural attenuation, biochar amendment, phytoremediation with ryegrass, and a combination of biochar and ryegrass, were investigated with greenhouse pot experiments over a 90-day period. The results showed that planting ryegrass in soil can significantly improve the remova...
