چکیده

Haemolymphs were aseptically collected from matured African Land Snails (Achatina achatina) obtained four villages in Akure metropolis and examined for biochemical microbiological properties using standard methods. Four (Ibulesoro, Aule, Igoba Oda) within purposefully selected this study, Twenty (20) snails each village a total of eighty (80) snail samples the villages. The results constituents haemolymph revealed that mean values pH ranged 6.68 - 6.97; protein (mg/dl) 24.27 30.33; glucose 13.94 19.33; lipid (mg/L) 1.38 – 1.71; urea (g/dl) 3.63 3.92; albumin 1.74 1.96 globulin 3.13 3.52. Mineral components all locations concentration sodium 138.02 209.54; calcium 30.63 38.01; phosphate 54.36 65.74; potassium 32.15 40.22; bicarbonate 21.08 27.31; magnesium 16.41 21.52 chloride 83.07 118.92. plate count various bacterial fungi isolate. amount (cfu/ml) isolates are Staphylococcus aureus which 1.92 x 103 2.86 103; Faecal strephtoccoci 2.48 103– 4.26 Shigella dysentriae 0.83 2.23 others include Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Bacillus spp, Escherichia coli Klebsiella pneumonia. predominant isolate was mucor spp with 4.31 9.33 followed by Aspergilus fumigatus 3.21 5.43 , Rhizopus Aspergillus flavus, niger. study fluid (haemolymph) contained adequate nutritionally valuable minerals such as sodium, potassium, other ions could enhance body normal physiological function when consumed. However, prevalent some pathogenic proof it to be unsafe human consumption its raw form. therefore suggest should adequately pasteurized disinfect before herbal remedies medicinal purpose.

African land snail Achatina marginatus, as bioindicator of environmental pollution

Activity of xanthine oxidase, levels of lipid peroxidation and ascorbic acid were studied in African land snail (Achatina marginatus) from two sites with different pollution potentials. Lipid peroxidation was significantly higher in the snails from the polluted site compared to the value obtained from the same species from the control site. Similarly, the activity of xanthine oxidase in the sna...

Giant African snail, Achatina fulica, as a snail predator

Individuals of Achatina fulica (Bowdich, 1822) were observed preying on veronicellid slugs at two sites on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. As such, the presence of A. fulica may pose a greater threat to terrestrial mollusc conservation than previously imagined. It is our hope that this note provides some impetus for other researchers to explore the possible predation impacts of introduced populatio...

A new glycosaminoglycan from the giant African snail Achatina fulica.

A new glycosaminoglycan has been isolated from the giant African snail Achatina fulica. This polysaccharide had a molecular weight of 29,000, calculated based on the viscometry, and a uniform repeating disaccharide structure of -->4)-2-acetyl,2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranose (1-->4)-2-sulfo-alpha-L-idopyranosyluronic acid (1-->. This polysaccharide represents a new, previously undescribed glycosam...

Cysteine-Rich Atrial Secretory Protein from the Snail Achatina achatina: Purification and Structural Characterization

Despite extensive studies of cardiac bioactive peptides and their functions in molluscs, soluble proteins expressed in the heart and secreted into the circulation have not yet been reported. In this study, we describe an 18.1-kDa, cysteine-rich atrial secretory protein (CRASP) isolated from the terrestrial snail Achatina achatina that has no detectable sequence similarity to any known protein o...

Suppression of tumor growth by a new glycosaminoglycan isolated from the African giant snail Achatina fulica.

Acharan sulfate is a new type of glycosaminoglycan from the giant African snail, Achatina fulica. Acharan sulfate, which has a primary repeating disaccharide structure of alpha-D-N-acetylglucosaminyl-2-O-sulfo-alpha-L-iduronic acid, was studied as a potential antitumor agent in both in vivo and in vitro assays. The antiangiogenic activity of acharan sulfate was evaluated in the chorioallantoic ...
