چکیده

Membrane phase behavior induced by the binding of curvature-inducing proteins is studied a combination analytical and numerical approaches. In thermal equilibrium under detailed balance between unbinding, membrane exhibits three phases: an unbound uniform flat (U), bound (B), separated/corrugated (SC). SC phase, form hexagonally-ordered bowl-shaped domains. The transitions U phases B are second order first order, respectively. At small spontaneous curvature protein or high surface tension, transition becomes continuous. Moreover, first-order found at zero driven Casimir-like interactions rigid proteins. Furthermore, nonequilibrium dynamics investigated addition active unbinding constant rate. processes alter stability phase.

Membrane-mediated aggregation of curvature-inducing nematogens and membrane tubulation.

The shapes of cell membranes are largely regulated by membrane-associated, curvature-active proteins. Herein, we use a numerical model of the membrane, recently developed by us, with elongated membrane inclusions possessing spontaneous directional curvatures that could be different along, and perpendicular to, the membrane's long axis. We show that, due to membrane-mediated interactions, these ...

Arabidopsis CURVATURE THYLAKOID1 proteins modify thylakoid architecture by inducing membrane curvature.

Chloroplasts of land plants characteristically contain grana, cylindrical stacks of thylakoid membranes. A granum consists of a core of appressed membranes, two stroma-exposed end membranes, and margins, which connect pairs of grana membranes at their lumenal sides. Multiple forces contribute to grana stacking, but it is not known how the extreme curvature at margins is generated and maintained...

Defining the free-energy landscape of curvature-inducing proteins on membrane bilayers.

Curvature-sensing and curvature-remodeling proteins, such as Amphiphysin, Epsin, and Exo70, are known to reshape cell membranes, and this remodeling event is essential for key biophysical processes such as tubulation, exocytosis, and endocytosis. Curvature-inducing proteins can act as curvature sensors; they aggregate to membrane regions matching their intrinsic curvature; as well as induce cur...

Intrinsically disordered proteins drive membrane curvature

Assembly of highly curved membrane structures is essential to cellular physiology. The prevailing view has been that proteins with curvature-promoting structural motifs, such as wedge-like amphipathic helices and crescent-shaped BAR domains, are required for bending membranes. Here we report that intrinsically disordered domains of the endocytic adaptor proteins, Epsin1 and AP180 are highly pot...

Curvature-mediated interactions between membrane proteins.

Membrane proteins can deform the lipid bilayer in which they are embedded. If the bilayer is treated as an elastic medium, then these deformations will generate elastic interactions between the proteins. The interaction between a single pair is repulsive. However, for three or more proteins, we show that there are nonpairwise forces whose magnitude is similar to the pairwise forces. When there ...
