Bilateral nevus of Ota – A rare clinical presentation

Nevus of Ota is a rare congenital hamartoma the dermal melanocytes causing blue-grey hyperpigmentation eye and adnexa. The condition usually unilateral but rarely it can be bilateral. A 28-year-old lady from West Bengal, India, visited Ophthalmology outpatient department with complaints blackish discoloration left side face periorbital region. On examination, large (5x6 cm) lesion was noted on skin face, forehead, sclera, lower palpebral conjunctiva, ala nose, hard palate along sclera iris right eye. Cutaneous examination revealed that diffuse, homogenous, blue-gray colored macular pigmentation ill-defined borders. lesions do not undergo spontaneous regression, intensity blue-black discolored may vary during menstruation, fatigue or change in weather. patient needs to followed up annually, checking at each visit for visual acuity, biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure, gonioscopy fundus examination. thorough knowledge disease process, possible complications screening protocol help ophthalmologist pick sight threatening early, initiate prompt treatment which avert loss.
