Beyond Solutionism: Differently Motivating Media Literacy

This article discusses three research projects conducted in partnerships diverse societies. We assess the implications of each project for media literacy’s motivations and intentionality through a theory change. For first project, BBC Media Action, we developed change which frames this literacy training programme in-country practitioners to strengthen ecosystems support resilience information disorder. Our second was Dual Netizenship, youth-led, intercultural partnership between Tunisia UK at intersection literacy, civic agency, decolonisation. Thirdly, Digital Arts—Refugee Engagement<em> </em>(DA-RE) brought together refugee youth Bangladesh Turkey combine digital artivism with capability development. The status as conduit positive (rather than solution itself) different partnership—from production counter-script youth-led capacity-building participants host communities situating “mainstream media” itself agent intervention ecosystem. situates form context-bound development opposed set neutral, universal competences. that share here “third space” design principles.
