Bernoulli Factories and Black-box Reductions in Mechanism Design

چکیده

We provide a polynomial time reduction from Bayesian incentive compatible mechanism design to algorithm for welfare maximization problems. Unlike prior results, our achieves exact compatibility problems with multi-dimensional and continuous type spaces. The key technical barrier preventing in black-box reductions is that repairing violations of constraints requires understanding the distribution mechanism’s output, which typically #P-hard compute. Reductions instead estimate output by sampling inevitably suffer error, precludes compatibility. overcome this employing generalizing computational model literature on Bernoulli Factories . In factory problem, one given function mapping bias an “input coin” “output coin,” challenge efficiently simulate coin only sample access input coin. This ingredient designing bipartite matching, can be used make approximately Hartline et al. [18] exactly compatible.

Black-Box Reductions in Mechanism Design

A central question in algorithmic mechanism design is to understand the additional difficulty introduced by truthfulness requirements in the design of approximation algorithms for social welfare maximization. In this paper, by studying the problem of single-parameter combinatorial auctions, we obtain the first black-box reduction that converts any approximation algorithm to a truthful mechanism...

Black-box reductions for cost-sharing mechanism design

We consider the design of strategyproof cost-sharing mechanisms. We give two simple, but extremely versatile, black-box reductions, that in combination reduce the cost-sharing mechanism-design problem to the algorithmic problem of finding a minimum-cost solution for a set of players. Our first reduction shows that any truthful, α-approximation mechanism for the socialcost minimization (SCM) pro...

Black-Box Reductions and Separations in Cryptography

Cryptographic constructions of one primitive or protocol from another one usually come with a reductionist security proof, in the sense that the reduction turns any adversary breaking the derived scheme into a successful adversary against the underlying scheme. Very often the reduction is black-box in the sense that it only looks at the input/output behavior of the adversary and of the underlyi...

Notions of Black-Box Reductions, Revisited

Reductions are the common technique to prove security of cryptographic constructions based on a primitive. They take an allegedly successful adversary against the construction and turn it into a successful adversary against the underlying primitive. To a large extent, these reductions are black-box in the sense that they consider the primitive and/or the adversary against the construction only ...

Optimal Black-Box Reductions Between Optimization Objectives

The diverse world of machine learning applications has given rise to a plethora of algorithms and optimization methods, finely tuned to the specific regression or classification task at hand. We reduce the complexity of algorithm design for machine learning by reductions: we develop reductions that take a method developed for one setting and apply it to the entire spectrum of smoothness and str...
