Benefits and Limitations of Using Hydrochars from Organic Residues as Replacement for Peat on Growing Media

چکیده
New technologies for the production of peat-substitutes are required to meet rising demand growing media in horticulture and need preserve natural peatlands. Hydrothermal conversion organic residues into char materials, hydrochars, with peat-like properties may produce such substitutes, reducing environmental impacts CO2 emissions from improper management. To assess their potential as a component media, cress seed germination tests used hydrochars digestate (D), spent coffee grounds (SCG), grape marc (GM). Pre- post-treatments (extraction, washing, drying) applied remove phytotoxic compounds associated process waters retained on nitrification bioassay water is predict toxicity. All achieve similar or better results compared feedstock, showing replace at least 5% peat media. SCG GM show inhibition above 5%, while all post-treated D-hydrochar mixtures >3 times longer roots than control. The test shows high sensitivity good agreement trends found water. Such can be way optimize combinations hydrothermal replacements.

The Cultivation of Arabidopsis for Experimental Research Using Commercially Available Peat-Based and Peat-Free Growing Media
Experimental research involving Arabidopsis thaliana often involves the quantification of phenotypic traits during cultivation on compost or other growing media. Many commercially-available growing media contain peat, but peat extraction is not sustainable due to its very slow rate of formation. Moreover, peat extraction reduces peatland biodiversity and releases stored carbon and methane into ...
متن کاملUse of Palm Waste Cellulose as a Substitute for Common Growing Media in Aglaonema Growing
In order to evaluate the possibility use of palm waste cellulose as a substitute substrate for growing pot plants, an experiment was conducted in completely randomized block design with 6 replication and six treatments on Aglaonema sp. The treatments were 5 levels including 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 palm celluloid wastes mixed with different rates of some amendments such as peat, coconut coir, perl...
