Benchmark Evaluation of Hybrid Fixed-Flapping Wing Aerial Robot With Autopilot Architecture for Autonomous Outdoor Flight Operations

This letter is focused on the benchmark evaluation and comparison of flapping fixed wing flight modes an hybrid platform developed for realization autonomous inspection operations outdoors. The combines high range endurance fixed-wing UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), with higher maneuverability intrinsic safety in interaction humans during hand launch capture. A unified model derived both configurations following Lagrange formulation to express multi-body dynamics aerodynamic forces propellers. proposed control scheme exploits similarities tail actuation generation thrust either wings or propellers, such a way that it can be implemented conventional autopilots, facilitating this adoption type platforms. To evaluate compare performance modes, set tests metrics are defined, including energy efficiency forward flight, trajectory tracking, capture, accuracy visual inspection. Experimental results outdoors validate prototype, identifying fixed/flapping transitions, evidencing mode compared wing.
