Being Zen: Pelevin, Buddha, and the Void

Victor Pelevin, whose rise to popularity coincided with the fall of Soviet Union, critiques notion national identity via prism Zen Buddhism. Pelevin embraces religion’s idea volatile self and undertakes project spiritually empowering Russians, by exposing futility constructing any identity. With linguistic, cultural, historical cross-references between Japan Russia, author creates a dialogical hybridity that exemplifies Buddhist concept non-duality in which becomes inseparable from other. This article analyzes four Pelevin’s novels—Chapaev Pustota, The Life Insects, Secret Views Mount Fuji, iPhuck 10—and examines how incorporates emptiness reinterpret Russian restorative way.
