Behavioral responses of male elk to hunting risk

چکیده

Abstract Prey respond to predation risk with a range of behavioral tactics that can vary based on space use and hunting mode the predator. Unlike other predators, human hunters are often more spatially temporally restricted, which creates period short‐duration, high‐intensity for prey. Consequently, identifying roles different modes (i.e., archery rifle), hunts targeted non‐targeted species, landscape features play in altering spatial temporal responses prey by humans is important effective management harvested populations. From 2009 2016, we used large‐scale experiment including 50 animal‐years location data from 38 unique male elk ( Cervus canadensis ) quantify changes movement resource selection response during 3 separate 5‐day controlled antlered males (elk archery, deer [ Odocoileus spp.] rifle, rifle) at Starkey Experimental Forest Range northeast Oregon, USA. We evaluated competing hypotheses regarding varying levels posed hunt types. predicted strength would increase perceived hunter lethality weak but similar rifle hunts) be closely associated activity within diel cycle (greater diurnal than nocturnal hours) across seasons. Elk were strongest hours when active generally pronounced both (supporting our hypothesis). Male avoided open roads all periods except breeding season alternated between avoidance areas high canopy cover hours. In combination these patterns led distinct distributional pre‐hunt periods. Patterns highlight importance managing heterogeneous landscapes meet variety habitat, harvest, satisfaction, escapement objectives.

Alterations of molecular and behavioral responses to cocaine by selective inhibition of Elk-1 phosphorylation.

Activation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway in the striatum is crucial for molecular adaptations and long-term behavioral alterations induced by cocaine. In response to cocaine, ERK controls the phosphorylation levels of both mitogen and stress-activated protein kinase 1 (MSK-1), a nuclear kinase involved in histone H3 (Ser10) and cAMP response element bindin...

From Wolves Hunting Elk to Rubik’s Cubes: Are the Cortices Composition/Decomposition Engines?

In which it is proposed that a single mathematical operation – determining compositions of transformational mappings – underlies the common cortical neuroanatomy of brain areas responsible for vision, motor and thought. A biologically plausible mechanism that implements this mathematical operation is called the map-seeking circuit.

Risk and Ethical Concerns of Hunting Male Elephant: Behavioural and Physiological Assays of the Remaining Elephants

BACKGROUND Hunting of male African elephants may pose ethical and risk concerns, particularly given their status as a charismatic species of high touristic value, yet which are capable of both killing people and damaging infrastructure. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We quantified the effect of hunts of male elephants on (1) risk of attack or damage (11 hunts), and (2) behavioural (movement d...

Behavioral Responses to Natural Disasters

Catastrophic events can dramatically alter existing social and economic relationships. The consequences can be long-lasting and give rise to heterogeneity of behavior across populations. We investigate the impact of a large negative shock on altruism, trust and reciprocity in 30 small Honduran communities diversely affected by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. We conduct a survey of communities and beha...
