Bathymetry from satellite images: a proposal for adapting the band ratio approach to IKONOS data

Abstract The acquisition of bathymetric data in shallower waters is difficult to attain using traditional survey methods because the areas investigate may not be accessible hydrographic vessels, due risk grounding. For this reason, use satellite detection depth (satellite-derived bathymetry, SDB) constitutes a particularly useful and also economically advantageous alternative. In fact, approach based on analytical modelling light penetration through water column different multispectral bands allows cover big area against relatively low investment time resources. Particularly, empirical method named band ratio (BRM) degrees absorption at bands. accuracy SDB comparable with that surveys, but we can certainly improve it by choosing images high geometric resolution. This article aims BRM applied resolution images, IKONOS-2, concerning Bay Pozzuoli (Italy), results performing determination relation between depth. Two non-linear functions such as exponential function 3rd degree polynomial (3DP) are proposed, instead regression line, approximate relationship values reflectance ratios true collected measured points. Those derived from an Electronic Navigational Chart produced Italian Hydrographic Office. demonstrate adopted enhance SDB, specifically, 3DP supplies most model IKONOS-2 images.

Extracting Roads from Ikonos Images
Remote sensing has been used mostly to produce analyses on different aspects and phenomena concerning territory. The approach is not different from the one employed when analysing maps in the sense that analysis depends on the nature of data, maps and satellite images being two different sources of spatial data. Obviously, analysis based on cartographic data is different from the one based on s...
