Barriers to compliance to topical anti-glaucoma medication among glaucoma patients

Introduction: Medical management is the primary modality of therapy for open angle glaucoma. Due to nature and complexity treatment its chronicity, noncompliance an important limiting factor success. In our study, we attempt identify barriers affecting adherence, persistence & compliance topical anti-glaucoma medications in order be able overcome them. Materials Methods: A structured validated questionnaire identifying various barriers, like demographic, social, physical, medication related, doctor related patient compliance, adherence was administered 300 consenting patients. Results were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 software. Result: 89% patients found adherent 62 % fully compliant. Compliance better with higher education, good income, positive family history glaucoma, awareness about disease consequences; who given clear instructions by prescriber; those self-dependent drug instillation. Conclusion: Identification medical can help develop strategies simplified regimen should prescribed aid compliance. Efforts must also made professionals educate severity disease, outcome, importance regular continued use medications, technique instillation necessity follow up visits.
