BALLAST WATER TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES ON BOARD SHIPS

چکیده

Cases of bioinvasion in Brazil and abroad have been causing serious environmental economic problems great order. such as the golden mussel, zebra North Pacific star, among others, caused fishing activity, industry, cases clogging coolers maintenance hydroelectric turbines. The cholera epidemic took place a long time ago, this was also due to transport ballast between continents. Onshore water treatments are quite costly require logistical support. Ballast treatment on board despite having change project, physical space engine room seems be an excellent alternative, there already projects being manufactured, these approved by IMO. There is alternative reusing water, through desalination reverse osmosis, which fresh obtained that can used for other purposes. present work aims demonstrate arising from bioinvasion, alternatives, their advantages.

Ballast Water Analysis And Heat Treatment Using Waste Heat Recovery Systems On Board Ships

Ballast water contains a variety of organisms including bacteria, viruses and the adult and larval stages of the many marine and coastal plants and animals. As such, it poses serious ecological, economic and health problems and has serious negative effects on the global environment. This paper presents a new efficient ballast water analysis and heat treatment system using waste heat recovery sy...

Thresholds for tracing ships’ ballast water: an Australian case study

To limit the spread of non-indigenous marine species, ships can be legally required to conduct ballast water exchange (BWE) prior to discharging ballast water. It has been proposed to verify BWE by measuring concentrations of coastal tracers in ballast tanks, which should track their removal. Using 3 Australian ports as case studies (Port Botany, Port Curtis and Port Phillip Bay), each represen...

Potential microbial bioinvasions via ships' ballast water, sediment, and biofilm.

A prominent vector of aquatic invasive species to coastal regions is the discharge of water, sediments, and biofilm from ships' ballast-water tanks. During eight years of studying ships arriving to the lower Chesapeake Bay, we developed an understanding of the mechanisms by which invasive microorganisms might arrive to the region via ships. Within a given ship, habitats included ballast water, ...

Comparisons of interdisciplinary ballast water treatment systems and operational experiences from ships.

There are high functioning and low functioning ballast water treatment systems on board ships. In this study, five systems were analysed so as to methodically examine the operational difficulties for ship crew members while giving important consideration to sustainable environment practices. Multi-criteria analysis, a questionnaire, survey and interviews were used as the research method so as t...

Concentrated sodium chloride brine solutions as an additional treatment for preventing the introduction of nonindigenous species in the ballast tanks of ships declaring no ballast on board.

Currently, seawater flushing is the only management strategy for reducing the number of viable organisms in residual sediments and water of ballast tanks of vessels declaring no ballast on board (NOBOB) that traffic ports of the eastern United States. Previously, we identified several species of freshwater and brackish-water peracarid crustaceans able to survive the osmotic shock that occurs du...
