Balancing litterfall and decomposition in cacao agroforestry systems

چکیده

Abstract Backgrounds and aims Litter protects the underlying soil, depending on litterfall decomposition, but dynamics of standing litter stock in agroforestry systems remain poorly understood. We aimed to unravel effects quality, temporal patterns, microclimate, a possible home-field advantage (HFA) across land-use gradient. Methods quantified litterfall, stock, microclimate during year (remnant) forest, cacao-based simple complex agroforestry, cacao monocultures, annual crops producing area Indonesia. conducted reciprocal transfer experiment, tested decomposition rates pruning residues. Standing stocks were estimated from monthly rates. Results Variation quality influenced more strongly than variation or HFA. Lower monoculture decreased decay rate compared systems; mean residence time was over year. Mixing high- low-quality material residues modified rate, soil C N changes, offering options for targeted management protection nutrient release. Conclusions The seasonal patterns relatively slow supported permanence layer all production systems, protecting soil.

Nothofagus Litterfall and Litter Decomposition

South Chilean forest ecosystems represent one of the largest areas of old-growth temperate rainforests remaining in the Southern hemisphere and have a high ecological value, but suffer from deforestation, invasion by exotic species, fragmentation, and increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. To support sustainable forest management, more knowledge is required on nutrient cycling of these...

Carbon storage in soil size fractions under two cacao agroforestry systems in Bahia, Brazil.

Shaded perennial agroforestry systems contain relatively high quantities of soil carbon (C) resulting from continuous deposition of plant residues; however, the extent to which the C is sequestered in soil will depend on the extent of physical protection of soil organic C (SOC). The main objective of this study was to characterize SOC storage in relation to soil fraction-size classes in cacao (...

Multiple nutrients limit litterfall and decomposition in a tropical forest.

To explore the importance of 12 elements in litter production and decomposition, we fertilized 36 1600 m(2)-plots with combinations of N, P, K, or micronutrients (i.e. B, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, S, Zn) for 6 years in a lowland Panamanian forest. The 90% of litter falling as leaves and twigs failed to increase with fertilization, but reproductive litter (fruits and flowers) increased by 43% with...

Seasonality of litterfall and leaf decomposition in a cerrado site.

We investigated annual litterfall and leaf decomposition rate in a cerrado site. We collected woody plant litter monthly from April 2001 to March 2002 and from July 2003 to June 2004. We placed systematically 13 litter traps (0.5 x 0.5 m) in a line, 10 m one from the other. We sorted litter into 'leaves', 'stems', 'reproductive structures', and 'miscellanea' fractions, oven-dried them at 80 deg...

‘BALANCING AND SEQUENCING’ VERSUS ‘ONLY BALANCING’ IN MIXED MODEL U-LINE ASSEMBLY SYSTEMS: AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

With the growth in customers’ demand diversification, mixed-model U-lines (MMUL) have acquired increasing importance in the area of assembly systems. There are generally two different approaches in the literature for balancing such systems. Some researchers believe that since the types of models can be very diverse, a balancing approach without simultaneously sequencing of models will not yield...
