FAS Ligand Triggers Pulmonary Silicosis
We investigated the role of Fas ligand in murine silicosis. Wild-type mice instilled with silica developed severe pulmonary inflammation, with local production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and interstitial neutrophil and macrophage infiltration in the lungs. Strikingly, Fas ligand-deficient generalized lymphoproliferative disease mutant (gld) mice did not develop silicosis. The gld mic...
متن کاملScreening of pulmonary hypertension in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and silicosis by discriminant functions.
The aim of our prospective multicentric study was to develop a screening method for pulmonary hypertension in patients with chronic lung diseases. We investigated 710 patients in 10 hospitals: 315 males and 109 females with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and 286 males with silicosis. Manifest pulmonary hypertension was defined as pulmonary artery pressure greater than 20 mmHg (2.7 kPa) ...
متن کاملConcurrent Silicosis and Pulmonary Mycosis at Death
To examine risk for mycosis among persons with silicosis, we examined US mortality data for 1979-2004. Persons with silicosis were more likely to die with pulmonary mycosis than were those without pneumoconiosis or those with more common pneumoconioses. Health professionals should consider enhanced risk for mycosis for silica-exposed patients.
متن کاملPulmonary tuberculoma and miliary tuberculosis in silicosis.
Tuberculosis is a disease with protean manifestations. We present a case which was initially suspected as bronchogenic carcinoma with lymphangitic carcinomatosis, based on radiological appearance but later diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculoma with military tuberculosis and silicosis after thoracotomy and open lung biopsy. The patient was treated successfully with Antituberculosis Therapy (ATT). R...
متن کاملPulmonary Silicosis Presents with Pleural Effusion
Silica and silicate mineral dust inhalation can cause a variety of histopathological changes in the lungs and pleura. These include pulmonary silicotic nodules, interstitial infiltrate, fibrosis, and pleural thickening. Pleural effusion is an extremely rare presentation of silicosis. To our best knowledge, there have been only 2 cases of silicosis with pleural effusion reported in medical liter...
