Atmospheric pCO2 Reconstruction of Early Cretaceous Terrestrial Deposits in Texas and Oklahoma Using Pedogenic Carbonate and Occluded Organic Matter
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pedogenic carbonate samples collected from three Lower Cretaceous (Aptian–Albian) fossil localities in Texas and Oklahoma were analyzed to develop paleoatmospheric pCO2 estimates by measuring the stable carbon isotopes of pedogenic calcite their co-existing occluded organic matter. Calcite ?13C values ranged ?10.9‰ ?4.4‰ while matter ?27.3‰ ?21.1‰. These isotope measurements combined with temperature (30 °C) soil-respired CO2 concentration (839–6047 ppmV) provided atmospheric ranging 67 ppmV over 1100 ppmV. show a significant increase during late Aptian followed decrease early Albian transition period, roughly correlating OEA1b event. Given lack chronostratigraphic constraints geologic units study area, these data provide further evidence for approximate age as well pertinent paleoclimate insights into greenhouse climate conditions.

Paleoelevation reconstruction using stable isotopes, although a relatively new science, is making a signifi cant contribution to our understanding of the recent growth of the world’s major orogens. In this review we examine the use of both light stable isotopes of oxygen and the new “clumped-isotope” (Δ47) carbonate thermometer in carbonates from soils. Globally, the oxygen isotopic composition...
متن کاملAn atmospheric pCO2 reconstruction across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary from leaf megafossils.
The end-Cretaceous mass extinctions, 65 million years ago, profoundly influenced the course of biotic evolution. These extinctions coincided with a major extraterrestrial impact event and massive volcanism in India. Determining the relative importance of each event as a driver of environmental and biotic change across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (KTB) crucially depends on constraining the ...

Detailed organic petrography analysis were conducted on drill core and cutting samples from the Nahr Umr (Middle Albian), Burgan (Lower Albian) and Ratawi (Hauterivian) formations on the Soroosh and Nowrooz fields, NW part of the Iranian sector of the Persian Gulf. The thermal maturity of the Middle Albian Nahr Umr Formation appears to have reached the top of the oil window. The underlying Burg...

a r t i c l e i n f o Monte Carlo simulation testing of the sensitivity of the Fickian diffusion model used for paleo-PCO 2 proxies indicates that assuming annual average soil respiration rate results in over-estimation of PCO 2. In all cases, the natural variability of the factors of the model, including soil porosity and inverse tortuosity and the δ 13 C value of the soil produced CO 2 were n...
