Associations of atmospheric teleconnections with wintertime extratropical cyclones over East Asia and Northwest Pacific

Extratropical cyclones (ETCs) over East Asia and Northwest Pacific are identified tracked by applying an objective algorithm to the 850-hPa relative vorticity fields from ERA-Interim reanalysis. A total of 2866 ETCs originating at western side date line have been in extended November–March winters 1979 2018. The ETC tracks counted visualized using a hexagonal tessellation rather than regular longitude–latitude grids. Two generalized linear models (GLMs), Poisson regression model Gamma model, firstly applied investigate associations wintertime with three atmospheric teleconnection patterns. West (WP) pattern Pacific/North American (PNA) more responsible for meridional variability activities North Pacific, while influence Polar/Eurasia on is negligible. Results composite analysis qualitatively consistent that analysis. Composite maps differences jet stream, thermal gradient mid-tropospheric baroclinicity positive negative phases patterns also support close WP PNA
