Assessment of water yam (Dioscorea alata L.) landrace varieties for resistance to anthracnose disease

چکیده
Yam anthracnose disease (YAD), caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz, is most damaging fungal of Dioscorea alata yam worldwide. Local varieties, which sustain Côte d'Ivoire’s farmers and other end-users livelihoods, are highly susceptible to this pathogen. Thus, there a need for developing new cultivars production in d'Ivoire. To achieve such objective, identifying selecting sources resistance within existing germplasm crucial prior establishment breeding program. This study, therefore, aimed at determining field C. 115 D. landrace varieties. Field experiments were conducted Research Station Food Crops (SRCV) CNRA, Bouaké City, Central d'Ivoire, three growing seasons. Results showed that symptoms more noticeable four months after planting (P3): high severity incidence scores. At period, ‘Betebete’ group (DSS = 3.40 DI 99.81%) was sensitive across years. In contrast, ‘Brazo’ 2.24 94.81%) ‘Florido’ 2.59 97.23%) groups least sensitive. finding indicates local accessions from d’Ivoire have different sensitivity levels attacks. Therefore, genetic diversity work should be further exploited improvement programs cultivars, combining YAD, yield potential, superior tuber quality meet producers consumers’ needs. Key words: Anthracnose, resistance, environment, alata, plant breeding.

Comparative Evaluation of Physico-chemical Characteristics of Flours from Steeped Tubers of White Yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir), Water Yam (Dioscorea alata L.) and Yellow Yam (Dioscorea cayenensis Lam)
The study examined Yam Tuber Species (YTS), Tuber Steeping Duration (TSD) and Flour Particle Size (FPS) as factors of flour. Data were collected using white yam, water yam and yellow yam steeped in water (30 ± 2 °C, pH 6.78) and withdrawn, and the flour classified, and analyzed for each parameter. Results obtained showed that all the test parameters, Water Retention Capacity (WRC), Swelling Ind...
متن کاملDistribution, management and diversity of yam local varieties in Brazil: a study on Dioscorea alata L.
Widely spread in the tropics, yams were introduced into Brazil during the colonial period and are currently grown throughout the country. Despite its importance as a pharmacological and food source, there is a lack of studies describing how and where this tuber is grown in Brazil. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of the cultivation and distribution of Dioscorea alata in differen...
متن کاملNew microsatellite loci for water yam (Dioscorea alata, Dioscoreaceae) and cross-amplification for other Dioscorea species.
PREMISE OF THE STUDY Dioscorea alata L. is one of the most widely distributed species of the genus in the humid and semihumid tropics and is associated with traditional agriculture. Only a few microsatellite markers have been developed so far for this and other Dioscorea species. METHODS AND RESULTS We isolated 14 codominant polymorphic microsatellite markers using a microsatellite-enriched g...
متن کاملA Standardized RNA Isolation Protocol for Yam (Dioscorea alata L) cDNA Library Construction
For the purpose of constructing yam cDNA libraries, attempts to isolate high quality RNA using several previously reported protocols were unsuccessful. Therefore a protocol was standardized for yam total RNA isolation by using guanidium buffer at the Department of Biology, Virginia Sate University. The RNA isolated using this standardized protocol was high in quality and led to successful good ...
متن کاملGenomic Resources for Water Yam (Dioscorea alata L.): Analyses of EST-Sequences, De Novo Sequencing and GBS Libraries
The reducing cost and rapid progress in next-generation sequencing techniques coupled with high performance computational approaches have resulted in large-scale discovery of advanced genomic resources in several model and non-model plant species. Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a major food and cash crop in many countries but research efforts have been limited to understand the genetics and generate g...
