Assessing the Reliability of a Small-Scale Legacy Radiocarbon Dataset Using Chronometric Transparency Approaches: Torres Strait Radiocarbon Database
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new quality assurance framework was developed to assess the reliability of 14C ages from a small-scale legacy dataset archaeological sites across Torres Strait (northeastern Australia). Chronometric transparency principles were applied three stages data analysis, comprising basic, immediate, and advanced assessment associated metadata. Reliability ratings (1*, 2*, 3*, 4*) assigned represent confidence in individual radiocarbon ages. Results demonstrate utility high, medium, low creating chronological reconstructions. We determine that 343 ages, 73% awarded rating 3* or above.

Calibration of a radiocarbon age
The calibration of a radiocarbon age to a calendar date is reviewed. It is shown that the commonly-used programs for calibration sometimes give results that are significantly in error.

Printed in USA. 867 Prelude preprint MS#4690 Abstract–We explore the likely production and fate of 14C in the thick nitrogen atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan and investigate the constraints that measurements of 14C might place on Titan's photochemical, atmospheric transport and surface-atmosphere interaction processes. Titan's atmosphere is thick enough that cosmi...
متن کاملRadiocarbon Dating: The Continuing Revolution
Radiocarbon (I4C) dating, now in its fifth decade of general use, continues to be the most widely employed method of inferring chronometric age for late Pleistocene and Holocene age materials recovered from archeological contexts. Over the last decade, several technical advances in I4C studies have provided contexts for a number of significant applications in archeology that were previously eit...
متن کاملRadiocarbon Dating of Ground Water
Radiocarbon dating of ground water is used in combination with the primary measurements of classical hydrological and chemical analyses. Radiocarbon dating will produce the best results when it involves multiple measurements or sequential sampling. The most useful data come from these comparisons and not from absolute ages. In the case of multiple measurements, the apparent ages of the ground w...
