Assessing Socio-Economic Factors Affecting the Implementation of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) Mechanism

The Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) mechanism has been pursued as a means to provide incentives achieving conservation goals while also promoting rural development by alleviating poverty. However, the degree which these are met depends on implementation of programs, desirability and accessibility programs targeting communities. Understanding factors motivating or dissuading PES is vital successful implementation. This paper evaluated determinants locals’ preference in Begnas Lake Watershed. We interviewed 180 residents representing upstream downstream. Factors such income, distance between house lake, knowledge about PES, education, duration living area significantly determined attitude towards Their decision take stake program, if implemented, was influenced family size, PES. majority household prefer community forestry an institution indirect payment compensation mechanism. study suggests that can contribute uplifting livelihood local communities lake watershed. further recommends involvement multi-stakeholders ground-level awareness.
