Asserting Authorial Identity through Stance and Voice: Expert vs. Novice Scientific Writers

Successful scientific writers make use of various lexico-grammatical features to assert their authorial voice in ways that target audience finds most convincing. While many studies have focused on the stance markers writing, very few reported construction Malaysian writers. To address this, this paper reports a three-way comparative study stance-taking made by writers, international counterparts as well novice Analyses were conducted 1.2-million-word corpus 212 published research articles written local and 14 unpublished papers Using Hyland’s (2005b) taxonomy markers, we found both experts displayed similar patterns, albeit different approaches stance-taking. In particular, prefer boosters when establishing niche, while chose first-person plural pronouns hedges for positioning results. Novice other hand, consistently showed lack strategies but tended take an attitudinal discussion conclusion segments. The differences expert between counterparts, point towards complexity stance-marking writing.
