Assassin bugs can reduce the aggression of their spider prey before an attack

چکیده
Abstract Predators that hunt dangerous prey require specialized predatory tactics to avoid counter-attack. Usually, these reduce the probability of detection. The assassin bugs Stenolemus bituberus and S. giraffa rely on stealth or mimicry web-building spiders. Paradoxically, however, tap spiders with their antennae prior attacking, leaving vulnerable detection Here, we tested function tapping. We used a controlled, repeated-measures experiment assess responses (Pholcus phalangioides) simulated compared after being tapped leg (mimicking tapping by Stenolemus) sham-tapped. show can likelihood will behave aggressively, in turn lowering risks injury for bug predators. Tapping may be an adaptation intraspecific aggression is exploited

Assassin bug uses aggressive mimicry to lure spider prey.
Assassin bugs (Stenolemus bituberus) hunt web-building spiders by invading the web and plucking the silk to generate vibrations that lure the resident spider into striking range. To test whether vibrations generated by bugs aggressively mimic the vibrations generated by insect prey, we compared the responses of spiders to bugs with how they responded to prey, courting male spiders and leaves fa...
متن کاملCues by which Portia fimbriata, an araneophagic jumping spider, distinguishes jumping-spider prey from other prey.
Portia fimbriata from Queensland, Australia, is an araneophagic jumping spider (Salticidae) that includes in its predatory strategy a tactic (cryptic stalking) enabling it to prey effectively on a wide range of salticids from other genera. Optical cues used by P. fimbriata to identify the salticid species on which it most commonly preys, Jacksonoides queenslandicus, were investigated experiment...

Australian crab spiders Thomisus spectabilis manipulate visual flower signals to lure introduced Apis mellifera. We gave Australian native bees, Austroplebia australis, the choice between two white daisies, Chrysanthemum frutescens, one of them occupied by a crab spider. The colour contrast between flowers and spiders affected the behaviour of native bees. Native bees approached spider-occupied...
متن کاملSpecialized Prey Selection Behavior of Two East African Assassin Bugs, Scipinnia repax and Nagusta sp. that Prey on Social Jumping Spiders
The prey choice behavior and predatory strategies of two East African assassin bugs, Scipinnia repax (Stäl 1961) and Nagusta sp. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), were investigated in the field and the laboratory. Both of these species are from the subfamily Harpactorinae and specialize in eating spiders. They prey especially often on social jumping spiders (Salticidae) that build nest complexes (nests ...

E3 ligase complex. Thalidomide redirects the E3 ligase activity of this complex, inhibiting autoubiquitylation whilst augmenting ubiquitylation and degradation of the B-cell-specific transcription factors IKZF1/3. The next decade is likely to witness the development of drugs targeting ubiquitin ligases at all levels of the conjugation cascade, as well as DUBs, for use in many areas of medicine....
