Artificial nectar feeders reduce sunbird abundance and plant visitation in Cape Fynbos adjacent to suburban areas

چکیده

Globally, people feed wild animals to interact with nature. Attracting nectarivorous birds gardens using artificial nectar feeders is increasingly popular, yet little known about its influence on and the plants they pollinate. We investigated effects of African their plant mutualists, by conducting feeding experiments in natural vegetation along suburban edge Cape Peninsula, South Africa. compared relative abundance local distribution patterns nectar-specialist, nectar-opportunist non-nectarivore bird species between feeder control treatments. then tested whether affected visitation rates two sunbird-pollinated Erica neighbouring sites. Nectar increased density nectarivores (but not non-nectarivores) but decreased vegetation, even winter when floral was high. These changes sunbird had no detectible E. abietina , plukenetii flowers average 16% at least up 300 m feeders. Thus, although supplementary may have conservation value for reducing urban sensitivity, it can inadvertently interfere bird-plant pollination networks competing native birds’ attention. • Effects mutualisms were tested. Feeders attracted suburbia-averse bordering fynbos veld. nectarivore regardless abundance. Sunbirds visited fewer present. significantly presence.

Prescribing Fire Frequencies in Cape Fynbos in Relation to Plant Demography1

Deputy Director for Conservation Research, South African Forestry Research Institute, Department of Water Affairs, Forestry and Environmental Conservation, Pretoria, Republic of South Africa. Abstract--Regulating fire frequency in Cape fynbos areas causes marked changes in vegetation. Very frequent fire eliminates seeding shrubs with long youth periods; infrequent fire reduces shrubs because of...

Estimating deer abundance in suburban areas with infrared-triggered cameras

Interactions between humans and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have become common, often resulting in management actions to mitigate negative impacts. Changes in population size are generally used to judge management actions. We examined deer population estimation techniques during 2 mark-resighting experiments in a woodlandgrassland habitat in central New York State and in a suburb...

Nectar microbes can reduce secondary metabolites in nectar and alter effects on nectar consumption by pollinators.

Secondary metabolites that are present in floral nectar have been hypothesized to enhance specificity in plant-pollinator mutualism by reducing larceny by non-pollinators, including microorganisms that colonize nectar. However, few studies have tested this hypothesis. Using synthetic nectar, we conducted laboratory and field experiments to examine the effects of five chemical compounds found in...
