Are Rural and Small Community Aerated Wastewater Stabilization Ponds a Neglected Source of Microplastic Pollution?

چکیده
Wastewater treatment systems collect and treat sewage that includes microplastics (MPs). However, we are not aware of any studies on the occurrence distribution MPs in wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs), which serve small communities worldwide. Here, characterized (~45 µm–5 mm) an aerated WSP serving ~500 houses adjacent lake. Putative were most abundant duckweed (Lemna minor) sludge (75 ± 22 12.8 3.1 particles/g, respectively: ±1 standard deviation (SD), n = 6, dry weight). In water, average concentrations (particles/L 1 SD, 6) highest pond (4.1 0.6), followed by effluent (3.9 0.5) lake (2.6 0.6). Over 20 types identified each different compartment, with varying somewhat between sludge, duckweed. Polyester polyethylene predominant types, terephthalate, polyacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, others. Morphologies consisted fibers (62–71%), fragments (28–37%), beads (1–6%). High-density polymers more frequently found sludge. Potential sources include synthetic textiles from laundry other plastics washed down household drains. Overall, ~786,000 MPs/day released a source food for waterfowl, demonstrate WSPs can be point to both aquatic terrestrial ecosystems thus deserve further scrutiny.

متن کاملThe Fate of Heavy Metals in Wastewater Stabilization Ponds
-The distribution of toxic heavy metals was studied throughout the process of treatment of domestic wastewater by stabilization ponds. The concentrations and distribution of free and bound zinc, cadmium, lead and copper through the various stages of a treatment plant were analyzed by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV). Only a slight decrease in the total metals concentration was observed during...
