Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Estimation from CryoSat-2 Satellite Data Using Machine Learning-Based Lead Detection
Satellite altimeters have been used to monitor Arctic sea ice thickness since the early 2000s. In order to estimate sea ice thickness from satellite altimeter data, leads (i.e., cracks between ice floes) should first be identified for the calculation of sea ice freeboard. In this study, we proposed novel approaches for lead detection using two machine learning algorithms: decision trees and ran...
متن کاملAnalysis of CryoSat’s radar altimeter waveforms over different Arctic sea ice regimes
Satellite altimetry has been used to derive information about sea ice thickness in the Arctic already for several decades. As part of the algorithms applied the shape of the radar signal is used to identify leads, the open water between ice floes. Analysis of airborne altimeter data reveals that the waveform shape can additionally be used to identify different sea ice types. In this study we an...

متن کاملKu-band radar penetration into snow cover on Arctic sea ice using airborne data
Satellite radar altimetry provides data to monitor winter Arctic sea-ice thickness variability on interannual, basin-wide scales. When using this technique an assumption is made that the peak of the radar return originates from the snow/ice interface. This has been shown to be true in the laboratory for cold, dry snow as is the case on Arctic sea ice during winter. However, this assumption has ...
