Approximate functional differencing

چکیده

Abstract Inference on common parameters in panel data models with individual-specific fixed effects is a classic example of Neyman and Scott’s (Econometrica 36:1–32, 1948) incidental parameter problem (IPP). One solution to this IPP functional differencing (Bonhomme Econometrica 80(4):1337–1385, 2012), which works when the number time periods T (and may be small), but not applicable all interest. Another solution, applies larger class models, “large- ” bias correction [pioneered by Hahn Kuersteiner 70(4):1639–1657, 2002) Newey 72(4):1295–1319, 2004)], only guaranteed work well sufficiently large. This paper provides unified approach that connects these two seemingly disparate solutions IPP. In doing so, we provide an approximate version differencing, is, large even relatively small.

Functional Differencing

In nonlinear panel data models, the incidental parameter problem remains a challenge to econometricians. Available solutions are often based on ingenious, modelspecific methods. In this paper, we propose a systematic approach to construct moment restrictions on common parameters that are free from the individual fixed effects. This is done by an orthogonal projection that differences out the un...

Supplement to “ Functional Differencing ” : Supplementary Appendix

Example 1B. Here we extend the analysis of Example 1B to censored regression models with random coefficients. Let us assume for simplicity that B (x, θ) has full-column rank q, for all θ, almost surely in x. Let V be a T × q matrix such that Q = V V ′ and V ′V = Iq. Let also U be a T × (T − q) matrix such that W = UU ′, and U ′U = IT−q. Lastly, let (μ, ν) = ( V ′Σ− 1 2 y, U ′Σ− 1 2 y ) . Then, ...

Approximate mixed additive and quadratic functional in 2-Banach spaces

In the paper we establish the general solution of the function equation f(2x+y)+f(2x-y) = f(x+y)+f(x-y)+2f(2x)-2f(x) and investigate the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of this equation in 2-Banach spaces.

Origin Tracking + + Text Differencing = = Textual Model Differencing

In textual modeling, models are created through an intermediate parsing step which maps textual representations to abstract model structures. Therefore, the identify of elements is not stable across different versions of the same model. Existing model differencing algorithms, therefore, cannot be applied directly because they need to identify model elements across versions. In this paper we pre...

Semi-Implicit Time Differencing

The basic ideas of semi-implicit time differencing are reviewed, including analytical results not widely referenced in the meteorological literature. It is shown that solving the resulting implicit equations by simple fixed-point iteration requires a relatively small time step to guarantee convergence, thus defeating the purpose of the semiimplicit method. In contrast, classical iteration metho...
